Mtaya Football League

Text Box: The Mtaya Football League was created by SAM Inc. in 1998 when founder, Sam Mchombo visited his home village of Chombo, and found the state of institutions inadequate for youth development. After donating a few balls, Sam was asked for further assistance. He realized this was a great opportunity to incorporate the youth into the development process. To ensure a steady stream of equipment (balls, uniforms, and cleats) the youth of the area had to commit themselves to rebuilding their community. In the process, Sam attracted the attention of young philanthropists at the University of California Berkeley, Kim Brown, a former member of the Cal Women’s Soccer program, who was able to solicit donations from the Cal Soccer Program.

The Mtaya Football League consists of 2 zones: the Kaombe Conference and Liwaladzi Conference. With the villages of Chombe and Liwaladzi serving as the northern and southern borders of the league, the expanse covers approximately 60 kilometers. Chairman of the Chombe School District, John Alex Maldadi, also runs the organization of the 15 team Chombe Conference. While the management of the Liwaladzi Conference is headed by Joseph Bai.
