Text Box: While the country is poor in resources, it is rich with the love of soccer.
It is commonplace to find talented, young soccer players playing bare-footed on dusty make-shift pitches, using tied-up rags or plastic papers for soccer balls, without appropriate outfit in the form of jerseys, let alone cleats or protective shin-guards.

In 1997, SAM Inc. founder, Sam Mchombo, on a visit to his native village of Chombo in an area called Nkhotakota, was appealed to by a group of youth for a soccer ball and a set of uniforms. Sam was able to secure the requested supplies, but with the applied conditions that the youth “pay forward” their support with active service in their community. The idea was to mobilize the youth to use their own skills and energy towards national development, where capital expenditures were unable to reach. Supplies of sporting equipment, and greater access to the sport they love, would be an incentive for their commitment to national development.
Since that day in 1997, Sam Mchombo’s idea has blossomed into Sports Alliance of Malawi (SAM) Inc, that sponsors over 40 teams in Malawi from the village level to the Women’s National Football Team.
